Greece faced many challenges over the past years: from the migration crisis in 2015 to the country’s debt crisis and a brutal economic depression. All this made the neo-fascist Golden Dawn party attractive to the electorate in 2012, and they have had a steady support from them ever since. The ultranationalist party has been described as ‘neo-Nazi’ ‘fascist’ and the party’s leader openly identified it as ‘racist’.

One of its key policies is the expulsion of illegal immigrants and to demand Germany to repay a loan that was forced upon Greece during the Axis occupation in 1941. In 2015 they secured 7% of the vote, even though several MPs were arrested on suspicion of forming a criminal organisation in 2013. The trials are ongoing as the party has been polling at 8% last December.
